As seen on his CV, Gerald has both extensive teaching and research experience, both of which he enjoys immensely. He got his Masters Degree at Brigham Young University with Dr. Allan Judd in endocrine-immune interactions in the adrenal gland. He then received his Ph.D. at the University of Kansas Medical Center, having worked with Dr. Michael Wolfe on reproductive endocrinology at a molecular level. Although he truly loved the field of endocrinology, he decided that he needed some diversity in his experience. He decided to work on adult stem cell biology with Dr. Ting Xie in his first postdoc at the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. His work there introduced to him a new model system, Drosophila melanogaster, and he was instantly hooked on it. However, during his excellent first postdoc at Stowers, a research-only institute, he realized he was missing a critical aspect in his experience: teaching. Throughout his graduate career he had enjoyed teaching the undergraduates and medical students through his teaching assistantships, as well as more involved teaching assignments. This aspect of his career was not being achieved while at the Stowers Institute. Therefore, he decided to look for another postdoc position that would involve some teaching. At that time, Utpal Banerjee was advertising an innovative teaching/research postdoc opportunity at UCLA. He applied for this position and was accepted into the program. He has now been involved in the UCLA Undergraduate Research Consortium in Functional Genomics funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for over one year, and is loving it. This position has been an excellent training opportunity for him to increase his abilities in many aspects of academia including: running a lab, mentoring, but most importantly research and teaching.
